Progressive discounts

A progressive discount grows as the customer buys more: for example 10% off from 200, then 15% off from 400. It applies automatically in the cart, with no code. You create it from Marketing > Discounts > Create > Progressive discount.

You need permission to manage discounts. Progressive discounts are available on every plan.

How tiers work

You set two or three tiers. Each tier has a threshold and a discount. The threshold is either the cart value or the number of products, and the customer gets the best tier they qualify for.

Threshold basisThe customer reaches a tier whenExample
Cart valueThe cart total reaches the tier's amountSpend 300, get 10% off
Products quantityThe cart holds at least the tier's number of productsAdd 3 products, get 15% off

Progressive discounts apply to all products. If other automatic discounts apply along with a progressive discount, the discount with the higher value takes priority; an automatic free shipping offer still applies with it.

  • Only one progressive discount can be active at a time.

  • A progressive discount doesn't combine with discount codes: when a customer enters a code, only one of the two applies.

  • The discount shows in the cart as soon as the customer reaches a tier. A bar that shows how much is left to the next tier depends on your theme; ask your theme developer to add it.

  5. Under Discount settings, choose the Discount type and fill in the tiers.

  6. Optionally add a Note for your staff.

  7. Select Create.

The discount runs by itself from its start date, and stops when you switch it off in the discounts list or its end date passes.

Tiers

Choose Percentage or Fixed amount under Discount type. Every tier uses the same type.

Each tier has these fields:

FieldRules
Cart value or Products quantityRequired, more than 0, and higher than the previous tier's threshold
Discount percentage or Fixed amountRequired, more than 0, and higher than the previous tier's value. A percentage can't exceed 100. With Cart value, a fixed amount must be less than the tier's cart value.
Maximum discount amountOnly for percentages. Tick it to cap the tier's discount. With Cart value, it can't exceed the tier's cart value.

Once a tier is filled in, its header sums it up, such as "With order total of 300 get 10% discount".

  • Select Add tier to add the third tier. Minimum 2 tiers • Maximum 3 tiers.

  • Only the third tier can be removed, with the bin icon in its header.

If a tier's error mentions the previous one, such as Tier threshold should be larger than previous one or Tier value should be larger than previous one, raise that tier's numbers or lower the earlier tier's.

Edit a progressive discount

  1. Find the discount in the discounts list. Its Discount value column lists each tier's value; hover over it to read every tier.

  2. Select the row, or choose Edit in its actions menu.

  3. Change the fields in Edit progressive discount, then select Edit.

Progressive discounts can't be bulk edited. When you select them with other discounts and choose Bulk edit, they're left out.

Tips for progressive discounts

  • Leave a clear gap between tiers. A step from 5% to 6% won't move anyone.

  • Put the first tier close to your current average order value, so many customers reach it with one more product.

  • With Percentage, set a Maximum discount amount on the higher tiers to protect your margin.

  • Don't run other discounts that overlap with it in the same period.
