Store themes

A theme, or store template, sets the look and layout of your storefront. Online store > Themes shows the theme your customers see now, the themes installed in your store and the custom themes you uploaded, with the actions to preview, customize and activate each one.

Staff members need the store design and themes permission, or the custom themes permission, to open this page. Activating a theme needs the custom themes permission. See Staff groups.

Current theme

The Current theme card shows the theme that is live in your storefront: its image, name, version and when it was last updated.

ActionWhat it does
PreviewOpens your storefront with this theme in a new tab.
CustomizeOpens the theme in the theme editor in a new tab.
More actions (⋯)Holds Preview, Edit CSS and Edit JS. See Add custom CSS or JavaScript.

If your current theme isn't built for the enhanced storefront, the page opens with the alert Your theme is no longer supported. Such a theme misses new storefront features and speed improvements. Select Discover themes to choose a supported theme in the Zid theme market.

Older themes that were not built for the enhanced storefront open in the classic theme editor when you select Customize. Customizing them depends on your plan.

Theme library

The Theme library table lists the themes installed in your store, five per page, with the theme image and Theme name. Each row has these actions; the ones that don't fit sit in the row's more-actions menu.

ActionWhat it does
CustomizeOpens the theme in the theme editor, even before you activate it.
ViewOpens the theme's details page, with its features, contact details and reviews.
ActivateMakes the theme your current theme. It appears only on themes that aren't active.
PreviewOpens a preview of the theme in a new tab.

Change your store theme

  1. In Theme library, find the theme you want.

  2. Select Customize to prepare its content first, and Preview to check it.

  3. Select Activate. You can also open the theme with View and select Activate at the top of its page.

The theme goes live in your storefront right away and moves to the Current theme card.

To find a new theme, select Discover all themes at the top of the page. It opens the Zid theme market, where you can buy a theme or add a free one.

Add custom CSS or JavaScript

Custom code lets you adjust the theme's styling or add small scripts without editing the theme files.

  1. On the Current theme card, open the more-actions menu (⋯).

  2. Select Edit CSS to change the styling, or Edit JS to add JavaScript.

  3. Write your code in the Edit theme CSS or Edit theme JS dialog.

  4. Select Save.

The same actions appear on each row of Custom themes and on a theme's details page. To remove your custom code, clear the editor and select Save.

Custom CSS and JavaScript run on your live storefront. A mistake can break the layout or the checkout, so preview your store after saving.

Edit CSS and Edit JS depend on your plan. When your plan doesn't include them, saving opens an upgrade dialog.

Custom themes

The Custom themes table lists themes built for your store by you or a developer and uploaded as a ZIP file.

ColumnWhat it shows
Theme nameThe name you gave the theme.
Created dateWhen the theme was uploaded.
Activate themeA switch that makes the theme your current theme, or deactivates it.

Each row also has Customize, Preview, Edit, Edit CSS, Edit JS and, for a theme that isn't active, Delete.

Custom themes depend on your plan and need the custom themes permission. Your plan also sets how many custom themes you can upload; when you reach the limit, Upload new theme opens an upgrade dialog.

If your plan doesn't include custom themes, look for the custom theme add-on under Browse add-ons on the Billing page, which lets you use one without changing plans. See Buy add-ons. The add-on lasts one year, and Zid emails you before it ends. If you don't renew it, your custom theme is removed and the default theme is applied; once you renew, the theme comes back as it was.

Upload a custom theme

  1. Select Upload new theme above the table. When you have no custom themes yet, the button sits in the empty table, next to Dev requirements, which opens the developer documentation for building a theme.

  2. Enter the theme's Name and Description. Both are required.

  3. Drop the theme's ZIP file into the uploader, or browse for it.

  4. Select Save.

Your developer builds the theme by following Zid's theme development guidelines, linked from Dev requirements. If the upload is rejected, check that the ZIP follows the structure in those guidelines and holds no extra files.

Edit a custom theme

  1. Select Edit on the theme's row.

  2. Change the Name or Description, or upload a new ZIP file to replace the theme files.

  3. Select Save.

Activate or deactivate a custom theme

  • To activate a custom theme, turn on its Activate theme switch.

  • To deactivate it, turn the switch off. The Deactivate theme dialog names the theme that will be activated in its place. Select Preview to check that theme, then Deactivate. If no other theme can take its place, the dialog says You can not deactivate this theme.

Suggested themes

Suggested themes shows a few themes from the theme market that suit your store, based on its type. Each card shows the theme's price, developer, rating and a few stores that use it. Select a theme to open its details, or View all to browse the whole Zid theme market.

In a store registered as a non-profit organization, this section is replaced by Public Themes, which lists the themes made for non-profit stores, and the Discover all themes button doesn't appear.
